Service Learning Outcome 4
Multicultural Community Building/Civic Engagement
Students learn from and work responsively and inclusively with diverse individuals, groups and organizations to build more just, equitable, and sustainable communities
Reflective Narrative
As service learners, we need to be careful of what we exemplify. While we are there for an extended amount of time, we do not want to give children a bad impression. It is our job to nurture inside of them a willingness to learn and be prepared to address misconceptions they have regarding certain cultural and societal topics. We should build community in our classrooms and teach students how they can build community outside the classroom. That can be as simple as sending them home with a smile on their face and sharing with others what they have learned in class. The goal is that they would remember that we need to accept others even if they seem different than us because we are all in this together.
In order to cultivate Japanese Language and Culture within my community I want to attend events that support Japanese as a foreign language. For example, the Japanese program in Salinas has many events every year that people can attend and support students who are learning Japan. My goal for next year is to attend the speech contest. I have previously attended the karaoke contest and a Halloween event. In university, I have participated in singing at the Cultural festival in Monterey and I want people to become interested in Japan through my activity. I would also like to invite other people to attend future events that focus on Japanese Culture. I think that it would be great to have a cultural festival in Salinas which has a diverse population.
