Service Learning Outcome 1
Self and Social Awareness:
Students deepen their understanding and analysis of the social, cultural and civic aspects of their personal and professional identities.
Reflective Narrative:
Through Service Learning I have learned how to better understand the community around me. Living in Salinas I had grown stereotypes about the people that live around me and I realize that my own misconceptions have limited how much I thought is possible for myself and my community. One of the most surprising aspects of my service learning experience is how much the children already know about Japanese Language and Culture. Of course, they have had previous exposure to it through other service learners beforehand, however what they remember for those who have had the experience of Japanese class and the eagerness to learn from both those who have and have had previous experience in Japanese class astounded me. I understand that I am fortunate to have the life that I have, and I realize that there are inequities present within the education system. It makes me very sad to see that some of the children have low proficiency levels in reading and writing at their current level and it shows me that we still have a long way to go before everyone has the equal right and access to a good education. Low income is a situation that plagues a lot of families in the area around the school I participated in service learning at and I believe it unfair to the children to suffer educational marginalization because the school system is not well funded. It is clear to me that individuality within community is important because without it we would not be able to rise above the expectations that society has set on us. However, social identity is important as well because without that we cannot function within our communities and one of the only ways we can improve who we are is by being a part of society and learning from others. I also noticed that some children at the schools held misconceptions about Japan and China and we had to take time out of several classes in order to address these and make sure that the children understood the difference and learning to accept that it is okay for others to be different from us.
