Welcome to my E-portfolio!
Hello, my name is Isaiah Owens. Welcome to my e-portfolio where I will be recapping my journey through the Japanese World Languages and Culture Major Program. I am currently in my 4th year at California State University Monterey Bay and I am so excited to share my experiences with you as I complete my courses and requirements. Thank you for viewing!
Statement of Purpose
I never imagined that I would enter into a university with the intention of majoring in Japanese. Language is a required course in high school and I wanted to learn French. However, my Mother refuted this idea and encouraged me to take Japanese, because my brother, who is 13 years older than me, had taken it when he was in high school. I decided to give it a try. The first day of class I did not know what to expect, I had no prior knowledge of the Japanese language. I remember hearing my teacher speak in Japanese for the first time and I was hooked.
Unfortunately Japanese was not available in my high school until my sophomore year so I was only able to take it for 3 years, although I did enter the AP Japanese class, which is equivalent to 4 years of Japanese, in my senior year. I was not sure yet what I wanted to do in college, but I knew that I wanted to continue with my Japanese. I also knew that I was interested in becoming a teacher, but I was not sure if I wanted to teach English or Japanese. I attended a college fair at CSUMB and met some of the Japanese staff and it convinced me that I wanted to teach Japanese to American students. CSUMB has a fantastic school of education and it is recognized as one of the best. That is how I ended up deciding to major in Japanese.
Personally, I have enjoyed being at CSUMB. The Japanese Language and Culture courses that I have taken throughout my college career have been excellent, particularly the language classes. The pacing of the class is steady and easy to manage, but also layered with difficulty that is well associated with learning a new language. I cannot speak so highly of the other classes I have taken which include subjects like math, history, and science, although that is a slightly biased opinion since I do not have any particular interests in those topics. For the most part, I stay focused on learning Japanese and I feel like CSUMB has a great environment for that.
My goal is to receive my bachelor's degree in Japanese in 4 years and then receive my teaching credentials for teaching in high school. The road is definitely not easy, it has been challenging and tough, but I am steadily learning more about Japanese and I am confident that I can achieve those goals. CSUMB is a wonderful school and the Japanese Language and Culture major field is one I would recommend for anyone who has vested interest in another part of the world.
