JAPN 311: Social Issues In Japan
Course Description:
As the drive to rebuild modern Japan after WWII slowed, latent and new social problems have become visible. This course offers interdisciplinary perspectives on issues such as care of the elderly and homeless, equal treatment of minorities, gender and labor issues, domestic and world ecological concerns, and relevant institutions that promote or attack prejudice towards heterogeneous social groups. Taught in English. (Prereq: GE Areas A1 and A2 and A3 and B4 with a C- or better)
Reflective Narrative:
Social Issues in Japan is a great class because not only does it fulfill your GWAR requirement, it also gives multiple insights into different perspectives of social issues in Japan. For example, some social issues that were covered by this class was the effects of World War 2 on Japan's economy and the impact it had on people and Gender Labor inequality. The professor is very knowledgeable of social issues and is a great guide throughout the class. This semester we had to make a blog and update it weekly based on the material we discussed in class. We also were exposed to a couple of documentaries, one of them was about biracial people living in Japan and the types of oppression they have faced from Japan's society. There is also a lot of content about the 2011 tsunami in Japan that killed thousands of people. I appreciate this class and the content that it strives to cover because people who want to learn about Japan's culture often times do not take the time to learn about the different issues that they have.
