JAPN 304: Introduction to Translation & Interpretation
Course description:
This course is an introduction to translating and interpreting that provides an overview of the knowledge necessary for the fields of translation and interpretation. Students will study general issues involved in translating and interpreting and building the foundation of knowledge and techniques including rapid reading, analyzing, summarizing and paraphrasing, listening comprehension and shadowing. Taught in Japanese. (Prereq: JAPN 300 or equivalent with a C- or better)
Reflective Narrative:
Translation and Interpretation is a class that I have wanted to take since I first started attending CSUMB almost 4 years ago. I heard that it was a class that was only offered once every few years so I did not hesitate when I found out that it would be available this semester. I had my own expectations of what the class would be like and I can say that it was completely different than I was expecting. Translation and Interpretation is a class that is entirely in Japanese so if you are not confident about your Japanese you may want to study harder. Overall it is an enjoyable class and the structure of the class is rigorous. You are expected to participate in the in-class discussions, and I was not confident in my Japanese language skills when I started this class and it has forced me to become better. It was not easy at all, some classes I had to struggle through because I did not understand the instructions. However, if you try your best, then that is all that can be said. The professor will completely understand as long as you give your best effort. I recommend everyone that is interested in translation and interpretation to take this class because you will not regret it. It is one of my favorite classes that I have taken at CSUMB.
