JAPN 308: Japanese Pop-Culture
Course description:
This course explores post WWII Japanese music, literature, artistic media, and hi-tech products. Investigates social themes ranging from post-holocaust Japanese hedonism to childhood fantasies by looking at Manga comic books, Animation, and popular music, as well as fashion and style, popular technology, consumerism, and environmental issues. Explores the evolution of pop culture and its impact on society. Taught in English. [Prereq: (GE Areas A1 and A2 and A3 and B4 with a C- or better) and (Junior or Senior Standing)]
Reflective Narrative:
Pop Culture is exactly what it says it is. This class is all about Japanese pop culture. I have previously taken another class, Cool Japan Today, that I thought would focus on pop culture, but it was a class heavy in historical content. Pop Culture does not rely on historical content as much, focusing more on the culture of Japan today and the recent events that has shaped it. I have a personal interest in this topic as I am a huge fan of Pokemon and Yugioh, which I grew up watching on TV and playing the video games and card games. Having also been to the center of Japanese Pop Culture, Tokyo, I wanted to take this class because of this interest. The course has a lot of reading so be prepared to have to read before every class at least 5-10 pages. It is not that bad because the readings that you are given are actually interesting. You will also watch several movies in class, including Princess Mononoke, one of my favorite Studio Ghibli movies. I recommend that anyone interested in Japanese Pop Culture take this class.
