JAPN 397: Independent Study
Course Description:
Individual study of a particular aspect of Japanese language, culture, or civilization. A written proposal for the study/research must be approved in advance by the sponsoring faculty member and the program coordinator. Number of credits depends on the nature of the student’s academic goals and the consent of the faculty advisor.
Reflective Narrative:
JAPN 397 is a course that is offered for students that need to make up units and unable to take a certain class in order to fulfill that requirement. This particular course that I took was Business Japan and focuses on language that is used in a business setting and also the appropriate way to behave while at work in Japan. This class taught me things that I was unaware of in Japan and reinforced my knowledge of certain Japanese honorifics that are used in a setting such as this. The pace of the class was great and since it is independent study it is up to you to do all your work for the class and keep up. Luckily, it is not too hard and is quite easy to work your way along if you keep up with it. While I do enjoy this class, I would only recommend it if you absolutely need to make up units you may have missed, especially due to study abroad.
